THE ENiGIES

    Enigies (Traditional Rulers) of Esanland

    Thoughts are legendary...

Esanland is ripe with strong cultural heritage that serves as a bond amongst Esan people worldwide. The Esan culture and traditions are well regarded and valued worldwide. The cornerstone to ensuring that Esanland culture and traditions remain salient and relevant till this day are the traditional rulers referred to as “Enigies” or “Onojie” when used in a singular term. These rulers incorporate the cultural significance of positions in promoting historical cultures, traditional norms, leadership, and social actions that incorporate classic paintings, artifacts, attires, monuments, archaeological sites and designs, among others. Other intangible cultural heritage are oratory skills, performing acts such as the popular “Igbabonelimin Dance” and well-known regional rituals.
